SANDAKAN: A two-year-old boy sustained
serious head injury while his mother and elder brother, 3, had minor
injury after a huge durian tree crashed through the roof of their home. The incident happened in Kampung Karamunting near here during a freak storm at around 5pm yesterday. Mohammad
Nur Amrizan, was with his mother and elder brother in the living room
while the father was resting at the balcony at the time of the
incident. Mohammad’s father escaped unscathed.
The boy’s
parents immediately brought him out from the ruins of their house and
rushed him to the Duchess of Kent Hospital here for treatment. Mohammad was admitted to the hospital’s male surgical ward and his condition was reported to be stable.
According
to the officer-in-charge of the Sandakan fire and rescue station Mohd
Razali Awang Ahmad, two fire engines with 10 firefighters rushed to the
village upon receiving an emergency call at 5.12pm. Mohd
Razali said the old durian tree was uprooted by a gust of strong wind
and subsequently crashed through the roof of the family home. The firefighters needed some 30 minutes to remove the fallen tree from the site yesterday. “Ten firefighters rushed to the location after being notified of the blaze at 12.14pm,” Mohd Razali said.
