SANDAKAN: The incorrect coverage of the entertainment and karaoke
industry by ntv7 last month has adversely affected business and
tarnished the good image of this town, said Elopura assemblyman Au Kam
Wah. He pointed out the television station had painted a negative image
which is inaccurate and unfair to the people here and the entertainment
and karaoke business community.
“We do have genuine and honest entertainment and karaoke pub
operators who are running a decent place providing entertaining and
relaxing services. “It is also a place for a social gathering,” said Au when commenting
on the raids by the Immigration Department on entertainment outlets here
on March 24. Au said nightly raids by the police on the entertainment and karaoke
outlets had affected their business and deprived others a descent place
to relax and enjoy entertainment.
“Vice activities are everywhere nationwide and the special focus on
Sandakan is totally unfair given the fact and admission by state Police
Commissioner Datuk Noor Rashid that prostitution involving foreign and
local women, including illegal immigrants, did exist in Sandakan and the
situation was not as bad as reported by ntv7 on March 24,” he added.
Au, however, does not encourage unhealthy and vice activities in
these entertainment and karaoke business outlets. The ntv7 television crew joined in seven raids by the Immigration
Department and showed footage of a van driven into the compound of a
building and there were some negotiations between potential customers
and public relations officers from neighbouring countries at the
entertainment outlets. Noor also said the police had sought the operation of ntv7 to furnish
a copy of the footage on prostitution activities in and around Sandakan
so that they could identify the people behind such activities and
owners of such premises.
